Could Sake Erase Your Wrinkles?

Cold SakeSake (pronounced sah-kee) is a Japanese wine made from fermented rice.  Not only is sake a favorite drink in Japan, but it is also has many great benefits for your skin.

Kojic acid is a potent compound that naturally decreases the melanin that your skin produces from sun damage and age. This compound is produced in sake as a part of the fermentation process.  When applied topically to skin, kojic acid has the ability to fade spots of dark pigmentation by inhibiting tyrosinase. On top of lighten dark spots, a splash of sake will balance your complexion by retaining moisture in your skin.

Want to treat your skin with this ancient Japanese beverage? Here is a recipe for a homemade sake mask:

  • 1 full teaspoon of sake kasu
  • 2 full teaspoons of sake
  • Optional: a dash of honey
  • Mix the ingredients in a bowl, adding the sake a bit at a time until you get a spreadable consistency.
  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and leave it for an hour at room temperature.
  • Usage:
After washing your face, spread the sake kasu mask on your face, and leave for 10-20 minutes.
  • When done, simply wash the mask away with water and apply any toner or moisturizer as usual.
